Nanmei is an early ripening cultivar known for its quality and strong umami, which rivals that of the popular Sae Midori. Its early maturation makes it particularly suitable for cultivation in warm climates. The name “Nanmei” is composed of two characters: 南 (nan)  meaning south and 茗 (mei) meaning tea plant, reflecting its cultivation in southern locales. The name also carries a poetic double meaning, as “nanmei” also refers to the vastness of the ocean, symbolizing a hope that this tea would one day spread across the world.

Our single-cultivar sencha Nanmei was grown in Minami Kyushu, Kagoshima, and, as is characteristic of sencha grown in this area, it is shaded for several days prior to harvesting. This shading process results in a rich, clear green liquor and a full body from heavy umami. The leaves boast a deep forest green color with long, elegant needles. The brewed tea offers a sweet aroma with hints of spearmint and seaweed. This tea’s most distinct flavor is its intense umami, complemented by flavor notes of sweet corn, squash, and potato skin. Nanmei offers a refined tea experience that highlights the unique terroir and cultivation practices of southern Kyushu.
